Dangers of Fast Food
The fast food industry began with a man named Ray Kroc who wanted to improve the McDonald’s brother’s corporation in California. Once able to own his own franchise, Kroc was able to use his influential nature to allow for the McDonald’s corporation to expand and grow to the 28,000 restaurants that exist worldwide today. (Schlosser) What is it about fast food that makes it so enticing? Well let’s see, it's less expensive which is enticing for consumers of a suffering economy, accessibility, service is also fast, convenience, and everywhere you look there is a fast food restaurant on practically every street corner; in stadiums, airports, college campuses and even our children’s schools therefore maximizing the convenience of them to consumers. Fast food is the most popular quick-service nourishment. You don’t have to go to the grocery store to buy your ingredients, drive home, and then prepare your meals. Why try cooking at home when you can get food at a much faster rate? Generations ago, families would spend quality time together at the dinner table and talk about each person’s day while eating a home cooked meal. What happened to those family values?
The market is so full of hungry consumers on extremely tight schedules with “instant gratification” mindsets; that to an enormous amount of people, fast food is the answer to all of their time problems. However, fast food is contributing to a huge social problem in the U.S., which is obesity. In today’s society, there is an outstanding number of obese American’s. Child obesity is becoming more of an epidemic concern among society today and is commonly linked to fast food. Advertising and marketing is being directed towards our children as they are the next generation of young adults. Although some might deny the consequences, we all know there is a steep price to pay.
