Choosing a specific character from the Old Testament is a real chore. Each one has many events and great lessons to be learned, they are relevant in any era. Each one leaves you with at least one major question, why did God use them? At any rate it is hard to choose. I chose David mainly because of one statement about him; he was a man after God’s own heart. David’s life is an open book; literally, it is easy to see what motivates him. David is a man of great faith, integrity, valiant, loyal, and very zealous for God.
If you were reading the Old Testament for the very first time you sense a turning point in Israel’s history when David comes on the scene. 1 Samuel 16:13 states “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him (David) in the midst of his brethren: and THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAME UPON DAVID FORM THAT DAY FORWARDâ€â€¦In all of Israel’s history, or even in world history, David stands out as God’s man as king and it is apparent that this event, Samuel’s anointing of David, catapulted David to the forefront of history.
David had a musical talent and was brought before demonically oppressed King Saul to give Saul relief from his spiritual affliction. As David played the harp with his hand 1 Sam.16: 23 say…so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. (KJV) This is evidence that God’s Spirit was upon David. Also, David authored at least 73 of the 150 psalms with moving, powerful words that not only reflect the way of worshipping God, but also reveal David’s relationship with God. In these beautiful verses, it is quite evident God’ Spirit was upon David. One of the greatest examples of this is found in Psalm 23, which doesn’t just describe the leadership and watchful eye of the Lord but also David’s utter dependence on the Lord as a sheep to the shepherd.
