In the story “The Day the Crows Stopped Talking” by Harvest Moon Eyes, the central problem or dilemma is the disturbing dream that Sky has and what it means. I feel this is the central problem because this is basically what the story is centered around. The reader doesn’t find out certain information until the end of the story, but when it comes down to it, it is still centered on her dream. Sky’s dream was about having the land sold and in turn ruining the reservation.
Some of the major sources of suspense in the story are why the crows stopped talking when Sky was found dead, why Sky was murdered, and why Sky was having a dream about land she really didn’t belong to and what the dream meant. It was told that when the crows stop talking, it means there is something very wrong. When Sky’s dead body was discovered, the crows stopped talking and nobody on the reservation seems to know why. Sky didn’t belong to that land or reservation. She was of mixed blood and an outsider who roamed onto the reservation and stayed. She was liked by the people on the reservation, but she was still an outsider and didn’t fit in. It was unclear as to why she was having a disturbing dream about a reservation she really didn’t belong to. What the dream is about and means is also suspenseful because it is about the selling of the land, which is being debated by the tribal council. The elders don’t take to Sky’s dream well, and don’t think the land should be sold, where the younger members think opposite.
The major crisis of the story is whether or not they should sell part of their land or not, and with Sky’s dream now in the mix, it complicates it more. The elders are not happy about Sky’s dream and then with selling the land. They feel her dream about the land was a sign that it was a bad idea to sell it. When Sky had the dream, she didn’t know what to think about it and was advised to see Aunt Lil, the reservation’s dream interpreter.
