Councilwomen Deanna Koski has completed levels I, II, and III of the Elected Officials Academy through the Michigan Municipal League. She is a graduate of the Sterling Heights Police Department Citizen’s Academy, the Sterling Heights Fire Department Citizen’s Academy, the CET program, IS-100 and IS-700. Also from Macomb Community College she earned her associate degree as a legal assistant. Koski works as a part-time office professional she is also a member of the Sterling Heights Area Chamber of Commerce, Oakland County Bar Association, and Business Women's Alliance. She served as a Macomb County city representative for the Michigan State Boundary Commission. In 2007 she was elected to the MML Board of Trustees for a three-year term. She has also served on the National League Cities, Public Safety and Crime Prevention Steering Committee and was president of the NLC Women in Municipal Government Association.
A city council is the policy-making body. So a city councilor looks at the city’s goals, major projects, and infrastructure improvements. Her position is not a full-time job. The average salary of a city council is at $70000. The office typically serves two-year terms. The election for city council is non-partisan. Political parties do no matter in a local or judicial election, party affiliation is not listed in the ballots.
Sterling Heights was incorporated as a city in 1968. Before 1968, Sterling Heights was known as Sterling Township. It is the third largest area in the state of Michigan. People consider it a great place to live and an excellent place to raise children. The topics that I will be discussing are social, economic, and housing characteristics. In those topics the information I will talk about are population, family and household size, individuals working, median household income, poverty level, total housing units and the amount occupied, and how many are owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing units.
