Currently, there are thirty five states that utilize the death penalty. The reading assignment focused on a particular execution of an inmate by lethal injection. The reading argued that lack of actual medical professionals combined with the concoction used to execute inmates is not sufficient and potentially caused Angel Diaz to die an inhumane death.
The death penalty has been used in the United States ever since the first British settlers arrived. The death penalty was derived from Great Britain. Just like any controversial topic, there are many people who believe the death penalty is inhumane and that it does not deter potential criminals from doing anything that will result in being executed. Through all the research I did, almost all the studies I found revealed that capital punishment has resulted in very little to no deterrence from capital crimes. In fact, in an article entitled The Death Penalty: No Evidence for Deterrence, John Donnohue and Justin Wolfers conclude that the estimates claiming that the death penalty saves numerous lives "are simply not credible." (The Economists’ Voice, April 2006). They also state that the same calculations used to prove the death penalty can save lives varies so much that it can also insinuate that the death penalty can cost lives.
Personally, I favor the death penalty. If a person commits a capital crime, then they should get an appropriate punishment. I know that the United States operates more on the dollar and not morals. There are many people, lobbyists, and politicians that think life in prison is just as effective as the death penalty. Through my research, the majority of the cost for someone on death row versus someone sentenced to life usually comes down to the trial. Additionally, the state also has costs associated with incarcerating an individual.
