Politics and Economy of Dominicans
Steven Gregory in his book The Devil Behind the Mirror provides an analysis about globalization and how it’s directly affecting the lives and livelihood of Dominicans. This raises the question as to how the economy affects Dominicans. If we draw from Gregory’s book, we can discern that life for the poor is a constant struggle to provide the basic necessities of food, shelter, and clothing, as well as a constant search for employment. If we analyze how globalization has unevenly distributed the resources that are necessary for survival, we begin to understand how much needs to be done for the people of Dominican Republic to live better lives. This paper will focus on how Dominicans’ economy was affected by selling of sugar companies to the foreigners and how Dominicans were struggling to earn a living.
According to Gregory, in the 19th century, Dominicans were living and working in a sugar company town.   The town of Ingenio Boca Chica was developed by Juan Bautista Vicini, an Italian born Merchant Capitalist, who immigrated to the Dominican Republic in 1882. At the end of 19th century the sugar industry reached its maximum development. The increase in sugar was encouraged by the disorder of sugar production in Cuba during its wars of independence (1868–1878), and by the decline in sugar beet production in Europe during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 (Gregory: 20). Most Dominicans were involved in, which was approximately 3,000 people.
During the time of crisis when sugar price fell, many sugar company owners had to sell their companies to the U.S controlled sugar mills like Porto Rico Sugar Company and the Cuban-Dominican Sugar Company. This had a very large impact on Dominican lives because the exporting market (sugar, cocoa, coffee, and tobacco) fell from 51.9 percent of hard currency to just 22.8 percent in 1977.
