Dehydration can occur when the body has a depletion of water. Feelings such as being light-headed, dizzy, or even nauseous can happen. When we loose water in our body it is felt quicker than any other type of vitamin or nutrient loss. You could go days if not weeks with a loss of some vitamins or even minerals and not feel the effects. Dehydration effects however would be felt right away. Unfortunately we all lose fluid. When we breathe, urinate, sweat etc. That’s why it’s important to keep hydrated properly at all times.
According to the Axia College Week Five reading Chapter 9 Water and Minerals (2004), “In adults, about 60% of body weight is water†(¶8). This means that our bodies are made from more water than any other single element. Water can be found inside and outside of cells in the body. It’s the single most important element of proper health.
Water among other things helps vitamins, minerals, and many other substances dissolve in the body. Water helps to create tears, which protect our eyes. It helps with salvia so we can chew. Water also helps to cushion joints and bones. It helps to lubricate and cleanse inside and outside of the body. You can find it inside every tissue within the human body. We also use water to maintain a body temperature rate. When we exercise for example we have an increased body temperature. This causes the production of sweat that is mostly water. As this dissipates from our skin heat is lost and the body cools. A person could potentially live for several weeks without food, however dehydration or a lack of water would cause death within only a few days.
