Postpartum depression is the change of mood that a woman experiences following childbirth. There are different levels of depression, and several factors that cause it.   When dealing with depression knowing the percent of women who have it, what it is like, what causes it are important.
Post partum depression is experienced by women following childbirth. According to Levy, and Sabraw up to 80 percent of women experience some level of depression following child birth. There are varying levels of depression. Low levels of depression are called “baby blues” (60).   More serious levels of depression are much more dangerous, they called postpartum depression.   Postpartum depression affects a small amount of new mothers; “only about one in 1,000” (60).   Shafa states postpartum depression can affect new and expectant mothers from four weeks prior the delivery up to one year post delivery. Postpartum depression can come in different levels and to a varying number of women, but what does it feel like for the new mothers.
Post partum depression has different affects on different women.   Levy, and Sabraw state the experiences of motherhood make women feel irritable, overwhelmed and tearful (60). These feelings have been known to begin three to four days following delivery however should only last a few weeks (60).   As said by Mcever women often feel listless, empty, inexplicably sad, and unconnected with her newborn. It is when the feelings increase or remain for a prolonged period of time it is considered to be postpartum depression. As stated by Shafa “you try to help them understand that they shouldn’t quickly write this off.”   Going through these changes is stressful and overwhelming for many new mothers. However they are not the cause for their trouble, it is their hormones and the social aspects.
