Diego Rivera
Diego Rivera and his twin brother Carlos Rivera were born on December 8, 1886, in Guanajuato, Mexico. His parents were Diego Rivera and Maria Barrientos de Rivera. He was one of Mexico’s most famous painters.   He rebelled against the traditional styles of painting. The style he developed consisted of a style combined with historical, social, and political ideas. He experimented with different techniques of painting throughout his life but, as a child he started out drawing. Before he could even read his dad had an art studio set up for him. Rivera died of heart failure on November 25, 1957, in Mexico City, Mexico.
Diego’s twin died two years after they were born. Diego and his family lived in Guanajuato, Mexico up until 1892. They then moved to Mexico City. Rivera’s father worked several jobs including, a teacher, a health inspector, and an editor at a newspaper. His mom worked as a doctor. Diego started drawing at the age of 3. His father actually made him an art studio to keep him from drawing on the walls and furniture. The studio was a room with canvas covered walls and was full of art supplies for Diego to explore with. Diego Rivera decided he wanted to be an artist at the young age of 10. At the age of 11, he started taking evening classes at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City. He enrolled in military school at the request of his father but, after two weeks he quit because he felt the regimen was way too strict. In 1897 Diego began studying painting at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City. His instructors included Andrés Ríos Félix Para (1845–1919), Santiago Rebull (1829–1902), and José María Velasco (1840–1912) (“Diego” par.3). Andres Rios Felix Para showed him Mexican art that was much different than the European art he was used to. Santiago Rebull taught him that the basis of a good painting was a good drawing.
