Abstract
Exploring the effectiveness of Direct Instruction in the classroom, this discussion briefly outlines the history and methodology of Direct Instruction. Many opinions have been offered about it, pro and con, but the research proves that direct instruction is one of the best methods for teaching students basic skills. Tailored for each class, the lesson plans are tested and detailed. When used for a special needs class, they offer the teacher a complete tool for teaching and for advancing the learning abilities of her students. Direct Instruction was based on data gathered during Project Follow Through on the education of students with low socio-economic backgrounds and poor educational development. Developed by behavioral specialists and experts, Direct Instruction programs are designed to help control the student’s behavior with the lesson, by keeping their attention and creating interest, leaving little time for behavior problems to develop. This results in the teacher having more time to teach and gives the student more time spent learning in a happier, less distracting learning environment.
