Through out the book ‘Tomorrow when the war began’, John Marsden has fundamentals theme that all occur through out the book, each theme with its own integration into the storyline whilst also causing controversy. It is these themes that are to be analysed in this essay along with select references to the text to support the arguments provided.
Survival
Survival is one of the main issues throughout the story and is also one of great controversy. Survival is inter-related into the story line as the main concept and theme behind the story is survival. The storyline is that an unknown military force is invading Australia and the story of the characters survival. Therefore survival is interrelated into the storyline at whole. Example content supporting the theme of survival is when they are hiding from military forces in order to survive, therefore incorporating the theme of survival. It causes controversy as it opens to debate whether people of their age group would really go to such an extent to survive. The author of the novel, John Marsden, effectively incorporates the theme of survival into certain features of the text. The theme is mostly integrated through the language of the text.
Friendship
The theme of Friendship is a recurring theme through out the book. The theme of friendship is ‘twinned’ into the story as many of the characters are dependant on their friendship in order to survive. Through out the story numerous references to the friendship between the friends are made. A particular reference is where they talk about the importance of the friendship that lies in-between them. Thus, the theme of friendship is incorporated into the storyline. The evidence to support the incorporation of friendship, is when Ellie and Corrie discuss travelling overseas as friends, therefore incorporating friendship into the storyline.
