Daunting Dealings of Divorce
Lets face it: marriage is difficult. Disagreements are inevitable and, unless they are delt with, can lead to serious relationship problems. In the chaos of everyday American life it's easy to want to just give up rather than work towards a solution. This may account for why nearly half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce. Unfortunately, divorce is not a magic answer to marital problems. Divorce can scar children and possibly leave one worse off than before the divorce. This is especially true for women, who often are left with little work experience. While this option may have its benefits at the time, divorce can effect many more aspects than a couple's marital status and have severe consequences in the long run.
My friend Tom, whom I have been close with from a very young age, has experienced the impact of divorce first hand. When his parents divorced he was effected so much that he seemed like a different person to me. He started behaving reclusively and became less talkative than before the break-up. From what I have observed, he also started having some deep seated trust issues. It could not have helped that his mother has had several boyfriends and a few attempted marriages since the divorce; all ending in failure. I still talk with Tom to this day; unfortunately he still has trouble coping with his past. My experiences with Tom have revealed to me just a few of the ways divorce harms children. A study by psychologist Judith Wallerstein implies that children of divorce “may be more likely than children from two-parent households to drop out of school, abuse drugs or alcohol or eventually get divorced themselves.” (“Covenant Marriages” 1.) Tom suffers from bi-polar disorder, abuses drugs, and nearly dropped out of high-school; all of which were not problems before his parent's divorce.
