Do people create Art to get to closer to reality or to
escape it?

1.1 Introduction

In this synopsis I am going to form a basis for what my dissertation will be created from
from, the research and conclusions I draw from this essay will be used to help produce
my dissertation. In this synopsis I have drew from a number of contrasting subjects with
an objective view of each. I have seen the strengths of the research and what I can
further research, I have researched what reality is for different philosophical stances and
how different societies approach reality. I then looked into how psychology relates art to
reality, the unconscious and what it could possibly be experiencing and repressing. The
senses and how they might be a direct link to our true experienced of reality and how
the mind causes us to be distanced from it, what reasons and motivations artists have to
create art.

2.1 What could be Reality

In the search for what could be reality you would have to understand what is true.

“All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses”
(Nietzsche 1886:134)

What Nietzsche is putting forth is that the truth is what the senses can experience. But if
our senses are tricked, ignored or only accepted into our unconscious mind how can we
have a direct experience of reality. Another of Nietzsche's Philosophies, cogito ergo sum
(I think there for I am), discusses the idea of existence by the essence of the mind. If a
mind can conceive itself or doubt its own existence, then it must be real. I would say
that this philosophical statement could be opposed for existence can be experienced but
what actually causes experiences to exist, if time is not static then the experiences are
not fixed and are already lost before they have existed. If there is no existence then how
can anything be real and how can anything be unreal for there is only the present
moment which is lost in the next.
