The Dolls House
The setting is the time and place in which the story happens. The New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield wrote “The Dolls House” the short story. “ The Dolls House” takes place in the high society part of a small town in New Zealand.
In the Burnell’s courtyard during the summer in a small town in New Zealand is where the story begins. The story takes place during the summer time in the late 1800’s. During the period in which the story took place, there was more open spaces and beautiful of the environment. During the 1800’s people were discriminated against how much wealth a family possessed. In that time the poor people which were the Kelvey’s, had no part in what ever the community did except for going to school. The Burnell’s were highly thought of due to the fact they were rich and the only family that had an exquisite dollhouse. The setting has an overall effect on the story because it describes what goes on in a story, and what time period it happened.
The setting has an overall effect on the story because of how people were treated during that time period. The Kelvey’s knew better than to be in the presence of the Burnell’s. They knew that they were not allowed to be around the Burnell’s because the Burnell’s had money and they did not have any money. That is wrong how they were treated because money does not make that person. Whatever part of society you were in you know where you place in the world. You knew what you were allowed to do, you knew where you were allowed to go, and you knew whom you were and were not allowed to associate with. You know where your place in the world is and that you are not allowed to leave that place.
