Dorfman Pacific was paying way too much in labor and really had no sense of organization in picking and shipping.
The text mentioned that during high volume times the warehouse had a lot of problems getting everything right. The problem that the warehouse was having can be defined as poor organization and very high labor costs. There are quite a few alternative solutions that I would use to approach and resolve this problem. I would first come up with an action plan that would include different ways to get organized and make it easier for the workers to do their job. In this plan I would mention some sort of computer tracking system so that it would be easier to correctly pick items and then deliver them where they needed to go. I would then try to implement the best choice in the plan and actually put it into action. I would research and then talk to the IT department and explain my concept to them. I would then implement the best system that would have the most positive outcome on the company.
Dorfman used a few different system building methods to make their warehouse wireless. They used prototyping which is trial an error of a new implemented program. They also used system design. Dorfman brought in an outside source to help with electronic tagging of items to make it easier to pick and ship. They also used production and maintenance to implement their new system.
As a consultant I would implement a lot of similar methodologies to realize the actual concept as envisioned. I would need to test the system and then train employees on how to use the new system.
