Team communication is a very important aspect if learning team dynamics. Team communication is important because It can determine the overall success or failure of the common team goal. What is communication? Communication is defined as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. (Meriam-Webster Online,2006) Without effective communication a group is just a bunch of people standing around unable to accomplish anything. Understanding the components and barriers of communication as well as giving and receiving feedback are essential elements of team communication. Team members should be open-minded about the comments and then make a decision about what to change when trying to communicate. (Carter,Bishop,Keautis,2008). Communication should be positive. It is important not to make team members feel bad by embarrassing them or making them feel uncomfortable.
Types of communication include email, phone conversations, or face to face meetings. It is very critical to use one of these forms of communication when placed in a group. When joining UOP one of the requirements for the GEN 300 class was to be placed in learning teams. We were placed by the teacher and given a group assignment due in week two. I was placed on team A. We all posted a forum with our contact information and when days went by and I noticed that nothing else had been posted from my group, I knew instantly that communication would be a barrier concerning this assignment.
