DMAX of Moraine, Ohio is the manufacturer of the Duramax Diesel engines found in GM diesel trucks. DMAX started diesel engine production on July 17, 2000, and increased annual production volume to 100,000 in 2001, 130,000 in 2002 and 140,000 in 2003. The engine that most people think of when they hear Duramax is the 6.6L turbo diesel engine currently found in all their trucks. This may not be the case for much longer; DMAX is coming out with a new engine for the GM light duty trucks and SUV’s. This new engine is a 4.5 liter turbo diesel engine producing 310 HP and 520 ft.lbs. of torque.
“GM developed, 4.5 L V8 turbo diesels putting down 310 horsepower and 520 lb.ft. of torque in the footprint of a small block 350.” Says John Neff of autoblog.com. It makes its debut in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light duty trucks in the 2010 model year; it is compact, powerful and fuel-efficient. The engine is also lighter, an important consideration in the competitive light truck market, because it was designed with more than 70 fewer parts. This makes the engine small enough to fit in any vehicle that can fit a small block V-8, and because the engine makes more efficient use of heat, fuel economy and performance are enhanced, and noise and emissions are reduced.

The new 4.5L diesel will be GM's first engine to use a selective catalytic reduction   NOx after-treatment system with a diesel particulate filter to meet the standards of Tier 2 Bin 5 and LEV 2 emissions, making it compliant in all 50 states. This makes for a very attractive system to achieve high fuel economy. Giving the engine a 13-percent reduction in CO2 emissions and at least a 90-percent reduction in particulates and NOx compared to many diesel vehicles today. So needless to say the environmentalists should be happy because it seems that diesel is also going green.
