Early Greek Civiliazation

Early Greek Civilizations
The ancient Greeks were a very influential part of today’s civilization. I find the Greeks
to be very interesting and so far, one of my favorite early civilizations. Through research outside
of class, I have   come to learn that the Greeks have made many contributions. These
contributions would include   philosophy, math, architecture, art and science. The story of the
Odyssey is a contribution from the Greeks that is one my favorite stories, even before the movie
“Troy”.
When it came to philosophy, Greek philosophers were very imaginable thinkers who
sought after the truth to life. Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle were three of the most famous
philosophers. Greek theater included comedies and tragedies. Comedies usually were plays that
made fun of a certain person or topic. On contrast, tragic plays would deal with human suffering
and usually ended in disaster. Greek art was conservative in character and beautifully depicted.
The Greek pottery is a type of art that really interested me.   The pottery was made for
everyday use and mainly consisted of jugs, decanters, drinking glasses, and bowls.
Ironically, we view the very same pottery today as priceless art. Vases usually were geometric in
their style. I think the vases were plainly geometric, but were very intricate with lots of detail.    
Another type of pottery, which in my opinion is the most beautiful type are the bowls and
vases that consisted of an orientalizing style. This type of style is rich with multiple colors and
usually contained mythical animals such as the sphinx or the griffin. The orientalizing style is
highly recognizable as well as representational. This style is a product of cultural ferment in the
Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean of the 8th and 7th centuries BCE.
