East verses West in the “White Castle”
The long standing rivalry between the East and the West has elicited several topical issues that date way back in ancient times. Issues of ethnicity between the East and the West and how the ethnicity has progressed, the differences that exist between the Islamic and Christianity religions and   the social gulf in the lifestyle and relationships that exist between the slaves and their masters finally form the main topical issues of discussion that define the long-standing conflict between the east and the west. Other minor themes in the rivalry worth mention include issues to do with exploitation, discrimination, resistance and over-reliance.
During the 17th Century, The Islamic religion had experienced growth at a lightening speed both the West and the East. However, during the 18century, a significant decline had been noted in the West. This was attributed to the West’s decision to embrace their own new-found ‘enlightenment’ of embracing the natural sciences rather then depending on God as the provider and taker of everything. This is demonstrated by the captured Venetian-slave who believed to have been knowledgeable in astronomy, physics, mathematics and painting. Frank Darvinoglu contributed that as a result, he is given a sunlit prison room where he writes prescriptions to prisoners,old pirates, young soldiers   and finally the master, Pasha.(cited in Orhan Pamuk, 1991).
The discriminations that arose based on the ethnic   status   between the west and the east is brought to our attention by the poor state of the prison facilities that the captured slaves from the West are held into. The   captured slaves from either side are discrimnated fully. “The gaol was a miserable place. Hundreds of captives rotted away in filth inside the tiny, damp cells”(Pamuk Orhan, 1991, p.15).The prisoners are forced to endure the hardships in these tiny cells.
