I have been in school for 16 years. Over those 16 years, I have had many teachers. With all those teachers, I have many memories from good ones to negative ones. These experiences have had a tremendous amount of influence on my philosophy on education. Throughout my education, there are teachers that I want to be like, and there are teachers that I want to make sure I am not like. My teaching philosophy has been shaped over the years based on my experience in school.
Elementary school had to be some of the roughest years in school for me. For me, kindergarten was uneventful. I have a twin sister and we were in the same class. We stayed together all the time and I did not socialize with anyone else. According to my mom, I did not struggle with academics. I was successful in learning my alphabet and numbers. I learned colors and shapes without a problem. The only problem my mom remembers is me and my sister staying together all the time. She remembers not worrying about it because we have so many cousins that we socialize with outside of school. Kindergarten came and went with no real memorable moments.
For me, first grade became the starting point of my problems in school. I was placed in Mrs. Woolstenhulme’s class. When we started the school year, Mrs. Woolstenhulme was eight months pregnant. When she delivered the baby about a month into class, we began getting a different substitute teacher every other week. During the first grade, the substitute teachers began to teach us how to read. Every other week, we would get a different teacher trying to teach us how to read. The new substitute would skip stuff or teach it a different way. I was succeeding in all my other classes, but reading and spelling. My mom began noticing a major speech impediment as well. She went and had a meeting with my sister’s teacher.
