The idea of charisma and having one leader who may not have the best intentions for their people who use their power to gain over other's is one negative side of organized religion. In today's society a huge example of this would be the extremist Muslims in the Middle East, more specifically Al Qaida of the Taliban. A recent charismatic leader, Osama Bin Laden was one who used his charisma to lead his followers to believe that their "Allah" wanted them to punish and kill the infidels. Infidels are people who are non Muslim. Those followers believed that they would be rewarded in Heaven for martyring themselves in order to kill.
This effects the lives of everyday people so much because of the terrorist attacks that happened on September 11th, 2001. Many of our soldiers are being deployed every day and many of them never make him home. Our soldiers are over there trying to make life better for not only people in the United States, but for people over seas as well. It can be very hard to support the war, but I am behind our soldiers 100%.
When people come together and believe in the power of prayer and strength not only emotionally but mentally this brings out a positive side of organized religion. An example of this is "Power of Prayer" which was a study done in San Francisco (Fisher, 2005). This study took many patients who had heart issues. They were broken up into two groups: one group who prayed and the other group who did not pray. The patients who did not pray "were five times more likely to require antibiotics, three times more likely to develop pulmonary edema and even twelve times more likely to require a mechanical ventilator" (Fisher, 2005). Those that did pray had a much better chance of not having any complications.
