Elevator Speech

In this scenario I ran into Nikki on the elevator in the doctor’s office.
Diane: Hey Nikki! How are you?
Nikki: Good, and you?
Diane: Great! Just finished my first week of school! I was a little concerned about navigating through-out the classroom but it is much easier than it looks!
Nikki: Wow! I have been contemplating going back to school. Tell me a little bit about it.
Diane: I attend the University of Phoenix. I am pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Health Care Administration. University of Phoenix is the only school that provides a full degree online. Take two courses per nine weeks. There is a University Library, Center for Writing Excellence, and Center for Mathematics Excellence. The Center for Writing Excellence provides feedback for necessary written communication skills; it will correct grammar and revise a paper to make it easily understood. The Center for Mathematics Excellence provides resources to help in mathematics and other classes.
Nikki: Yeah, that does sound great. How do you communicate with your teacher or classmates?
Diane: In formal terms it is called Asynchronous Communication, which is simply being able to communicate with others whom you are not with, as you would in email. There are different types of forums, a section where discussions take place. An individual forum is where you can communicate with your instructor privately, and turn in assignments. The entire class will have access to the Main forum, which is where you reply to your discussion questions and receive your participation.

Nikki: What exactly is participation and how does it work?

Diane: Participation is an activity that you receive a grade for taking part in a discussion week. Your teacher will post a discussion question in the main forum and students will reply in the same thread. A threaded discussion is a chain of combined messages posted in the Main forum.
