This is a persuasive research paper that discusses Embyonic Stem Cell Research. This paper defines Embryonic Stem Cells and outlines some of the misconceptions and issues involved - including religious, ethical, and political. This paper argues that embryonic stem cell research should continue because of the promise it holds for people afflicted with certain diseases.
Embryonic Stem Cell Research and the Debates Surrounding It
While some people might say that Embryonic Stem Cell research is immoral, others believe it to be a miraculous solution for treatment in many diseases, thus leading to a very controversial issue politically, religiously and ethically.
To Americans and people around the world, Christopher Reeves represented the face of stem cell research. His story, in short, was a horrible accident which left him paralyzed from the neck down, after which he became one of the biggest supporters of embryonic stem cell research. In the years after his accident, Reeves became one of the most outspoken patient-advocates on behalf of biomedical research, particularly embryonic stem cell research and nuclear transplantation.
With his friends and fellow actors, Michael J. Fox and Mary Tyler Moore, who also suffer from life-threatening conditions, Reeves used his star power in fighting to increase research funding and attention at a federal level by appearing in front of Congress as a patient advocate. Reeves collaborated with scientists, to convince the American people to support biomedical research for the common good. Unfortunately, since that time Christopher Reeves, or as most of us knew him, Superman, passed away from infection caused by bedsores.
Right now, some of you are probably asking yourselves what exactly are embryonic stem cells and what significance do they have. I asked the same question and discovered that the medical and biological terminology explaining these types of
cells can often become very complicated and confusing. I...
