Could you ever truly and utterly devote your time and energy to an infatuation with someone who shows every sign of wanting nothing to do with you? Pip is a simple boy—a simple, teenage boy, who just happens to adore Estella, a stuck up, spoiled and well-to-do upper class girl, and why not? I have already said that she is extremely well to do and at a much higher class than our protagonist Pip, and Pip is in awe of and amazed by this, as he believes that she is better than him because of it, and aims to emulate her behavior in an attempt to obtain her status. Why? Simply because he strives to become better, just like the rest of us.
Ever since their first meeting, Pip glorified Estella; he saw her as the most beautiful girl in the world. His infatuation with her and her strong influence as the only girl worthy of his affection causes him to change from a rather unfortunate, tender hearted little orphan boy with whom you almost cannot help but sympathize, because of the circumstances and conditions under which he lives, to a snobby, stuck up, wannabe “gentleman.†When Mrs. Havisham asks Pip about Estella, he gushes about her, passionately raving about how she is pretty, but proud and insulting. (INSERT QUOTES HERE). Mrs. Havisham tells Estella that she can break Pip’s her, practically encouraging her to do so and Estella enthusiastically obliges.
As the visits increase, so does Pip’s attraction to this pampered, physically appealing snob who makes said visits hell. He lives and breathes for her; he worships the ground that she walks on and admittedly cries internally for her because of the method with which she reciprocates his heartfelt longing and truly sincere feelings for her: she sees him as nothing more than a common boy, and makes this quite clear. With these increased visits, Estella begins to realize the deep feelings this uneducated blacksmith’s apprentice has for her, and becomes even more cold-hearted, if at all possible, taunting Pip,...
