Race and My Community in Bedford Stuyvesant

Growing up in my neck of the woods was not easy. You have tough skin in order to survive the streets in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY.   I am no stranger here in these streets that once had beautiful tree line streets that set off a special feeling when you walked down the block. This was an area where the parents of each child on the block had permission to take a switch off the bush and beat your tail if you were doing something wrong. There was an atmosphere of love and unity throughout the streets of Bedford Stuyvesant.   Now over thirty plus years later, the streets have definitely change from that Ma and Pa store on the corner that if you did not have money they will give you candy anyway. The lady that sold ices out of her home on those hot summer days for a nickel, and those streets that were calm and you can sit out on your stoop enjoying the nice cool air on an autumn night. Now the neighborhood is full of much diversity. Most of the racial makeup is of African Americans with a spread of White Americans. There is an eyeful of Hispanics and hint of Asian American to make this neighborhood a very good blend.   But every now and then, there would be a mix of racial tension brewing in the streets of Bedford Stuyvesant.   Between the African Americans and White American, between the Asian American and the Hispanic Americans, It would make the streets seem like we were at war with each other most of the time.
The area was pretty much an area with a lot of diversity and plenty of unity.   African Americans are in unity with mostly the Hispanics Americans and the White American will mostly converse with the Asian Americans. But for the most part everyone respected each other spaces and did not bother to violate anyone’s territory.
