Racism in Toledo
I live in the city of Toledo Ohio, and here there are many different groups of people. They have Black, Asian, Muslims, Whites, Hispanics, and a gay population at the same time. I am white and gay living in a black neighborhood with my boyfriend of two years. I have not lived here long to really make any judgments of the neighborhood that I live in, but at the same time, I do see some issues with race here, for example, the school system, police force, hate groups in the city of Toledo, such as, the sizable group of neo-Nazi’s. At the same time I see good things when it comes to diversity of people. For example equal right laws for gay people. There are other groups that teach diversity in Toledo, such as the Toledo Arts Museum, and The University of Toledo. At the same time the good diversity which is now present, came to be because of the 2005 riots brought on by the sizable neo-Nazi, who are well established here in Toledo Ohio.
The 2005 riots we brought on because of black gangs here in Toledo. The Neo-Nazi group here in had a march to stand up against the black gangs on the north side of Toledo who were harassing white people of Toledo according to CNN.com. Toledo Mayor Jack Ford declared a state of emergency, and asked for 50 highway patrol officers to reinforce Toledo police. A curfew came into effect at 8 p.m. for people "roaming around the streets," he said according to CNN.com. In the end the violence was contained to a six to eight block area of north Toledo. Fox news of Toledo also covered the story and many were arrested both in the black gangs and the Neo-Nazi’s. This was not the first riot that happened in Toledo. It was a cold reminder of the 67 riots according to blogs sites on line. On the other hand, the bad that came from these riots sparked change, and tolerance in the community of Toledo.
