Race and My Community
Introduction
This paper is about my community and how it relates to what I learned in this class. This is the most difficult part of this class I have had to deal with. I am not a big member of the community. More often than not I go to work, come home and maybe fish or hike once and a while. I am not a big fan of getting out even in the best of times. I am much happier with my family or out someone in nature relaxing. As a result I had to force myself to go out over the last week and experience some of the place I live to have some sort of experience to pull from for this paper. I did not want to move to the place I live now and I have not done anything to try and make it home. Thankfully I will be moving back home next month.
Currently, I reside in Burlington, Vermont. Burlington has a population of about 38,657 (www.city-data.com, 2009). The population is 91.3% white with Asians holding the biggest percentage of the minorities at 2.6% (www.city-data.com, 2009). The minority population here in Burlington is under 9%. I am always interviewing new people and keeping the applicant pool deep with possibilities. I see much more minorities than I do just straight white people in my interviews. I would have thought the percentage of minorities to be much higher. My work force has only got 10% white working here. This may give me a good point to write this paper with working with minorities much more than the average Burlington citizen.
I have only had to deal with racism a few times in my career and knock on wood I will not have to deal with it much more. Just before I became a manager the manager before me fired one of the agents for falsifying his time card. The proof was on film, we had a camera installed and caught the entire thing on video,...
