What do the terms race and ethnicity mean to you?
The term race, to me, means obvious differences like the color of one’s skin, facial features, or even the type of hair they have. Even then, I know that there is no real difference in race anymore because of interracial marriages. Race is unimportant to me. Race is man-made and we place far too much importance on race in our world.
Ethnicity is just how we group people.   Ethnic groups are created through common traits such as religion, geographical location, behavior, and linguistics. Ethnicity is an important means through which people can identify themselves. It's a way in which we identify and relate with each other. Not all black people are just black. There are black Americans, black people from Nigeria, or even South America. Ethnicity could also come from the customs one was raised on like the Jewish who celebrate Chanukah, or the
Christians who celebrate Christmas.

Why are these concepts important to United States society?
Ethnicity and race in U.S. society enables us to celebrate our multi-colored culture. It also alerts us to consider the deprivations faced by some of our minority groups and to make sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed -- regardless of race of ethnicity. It makes us that much stronger when it comes to understanding different parts of the world and how they work. This type of diversity also makes us more global and with the different types of diversity to the religion and cultures, everyone is able to do different things and not believe or do one thing.
