Ethnic Cleansing


With in the Sudan, especially the Darfur region, there is a lot of abuse by the government of the people.   There has been many tortures killings and murder with in this are.   The government calls it “ethnic cleansing”, that is also what Hitler called it with in his movement. This conflict and power abuse by the government lead to a lot of since less dying.
The Darfur is one of Sudan’s largest regions. The Darfur has been divided into the North, South, West, since the mid 1990’s. The ethnic groups that are predominant in the West Darfur are the Fur and the Masalit, who often united in with Arabs and other Africans. West Darfur has a population of close to 1.7 million, and is ethnically mixed although African groups are predominate in Geneina and Habila provinces.   The Fur are most in predominate Marra, Zalingei, Jebel and Wadi Salih provinces. Together the Masalitand the Fur make up the majority of the population of the West Darfur. Dar Masalit is located around Geneina, the state capital, and south and north along the border.
A lot of hostility broke out in West in 1998 and 1999. Arab began moving south earlier than usual. During these clashes, more than 60 Masalit villages were burned to the ground, and only one Arab village was burned, approximately 69 Masalit and 11 Arabs were killed, and more than 5,000 Masalit were left with out homes and fled either into Geneina town or Chad. Despite an agreement from both sides by leaders of many tribes, the fighting resumed in 1999 when Arabs once again moved down south earlier than expected. These newer fights in 1999 were even worse; more than 125 Masalit villages were burned with many being killed by the hundreds, including Arab tribal chiefs. Military forces were brought in by the government to try to decrease the violence by appointed a man responsible for security who has more power then west Darfur state governor.
