Explain how and why Mussolini was able to become Dictator of Italy between 1922 & 1926.

It was a series of events that caused Mussolini to eventually turn a constitutional rule to a dictatorship. Events ranging from support to the Fascist party, to the Fascist aggressive methods imposed against their political enemies.

To have a better understanding of Mussolini’s rise to dictatorship, Italy’s situation should be considered. Italy’s political parties were in conflict and struggling for power so no real progress was being made in the country’s organisation. Italy was in debt, and had food shortages, making peasants unhappy and causing unrest. Italians felt betrayed because the land they fought for in the WW1 was not given to them, and making Italians feel miserable and reducing the country’s morale and many Italian soldiers were massacred in combat(450,000+) , so Italians felt they had lost instead of winning.

Then in 1920, a radical movement emerges, showing how revolutionary it is and how committed they were to Italy: Peasants’ faith in already established constitutions was poor. Transforming the Italians, affecting people’s feelings and they started looking up to Mussolini as the man able to renovate the once glorious Italy. The Fascist party was backed by wealthy industrialists and landowners because they were afraid of socialist reforms. Fascists represented the means to stop communists and socialists; therefore they were supported by conservatives in the political aspect.

With all this assistance, the Fascists marched to Rome and took the city. Mussolini was then appointed Prime Minister of Italy by the King V. Emmanuel III, Mussolini then appointed himself as Minister of Interior and Minister of Foreign Affairs, so he could have a better grip of power… making himself feel more secure in his position. Mussolini was always playing fear on the Left, and which led to decrease in democracy.
