The decade of the 1920s saw major social and economic changes. The success and opportunity after of World War I left many individuals with a positive outlook. This general attitude encouraged the extravagance of many worldly pleasures. The development of ladies fashion was related to this transformation. It gradually became very important for women to align themselves with the look of the “flapperâ€. The flapper principles were a sign of women’s changing role in society. Political change during World War I forced women to break gender barriers by entering the workforce to replace the large number of men fighting abroad in the war. The absence of women back home altered a common perspective of their place in society. When women gained the right to vote, this major change of the feminine role was officially declared. This new found female individuality was expressed through every aspect of life.
Canada had entered a thriving epoch. After WWI, it was a great time for change. Women were voting for the first time, and there were big differences with the fashion style compared to women before the twenties. Most of the women before the twenties were more conventional and acted more like “ladiesâ€. The mid twenties main features of women’s fashion clothing were short skirts, low waistlines, and it was a time period of bobbed hair. Dancing and music were another inspiration for women during the twenties to being more dynamic and social. The great changes in the twenties switched women from conservative---- to more fashionable. The change in women’s right also allowed the women’s role to change in society. Canada was deeply influenced by this. This moment in time, as I define it, began at the end of World War I in 1918 - and ended with the beginning of the Depression in 1929. As with all the female fashion during the 1920s, evening dresses were designed to expose more of the body.
