Thomson and Holden have a lot in common. They both never grow up, they both take women for granted and both of them have problems with substance abuse and suicide.
Thomson was a troublemaker since he was a little kid. His mom said “He was born different very different.” (III. 3) She also said “He was angry as a little boy and got in a lot of trouble.” (III. 3) He liked to get in trouble and cause chaos. Thomson would go around the highlands where he lived and would start stuff with the black people, he would also start fires in peoples yards. “Hunter and his group would shoot these guys with BB guns and hurl racial insults at them.”(III. 5) “Hunter would go around and shoot these piles of leaves and start fires allover the highlands.” (III.5) Thomson liked to cause chaos as an adult to. The president of Hells Angels at the time Hunter was writing his book Hells Angels said “He would fire a gun out the window of his apartment in San Francisco to impress people.” HE might of done this because of his insecurity. (III.83) Thomson and his friend Jack Thibeau were riding on a motorcycle and they crashed going eighty five miles and hour, and when the police came Thomson took out a bowie knife because he thought the police had been following him. “All of a sudden Hunter was on his feet holding a bowie knife, standing a facing the police.”(III. 91) Hunter was know for his pranks on people but one of the most well know stories is when he secretly got everyone at his dinner party to take LSD. “ Hunter had said the same thing to each person in the room and separately dosed everyone.” (III.150) “Holden who is much less mischievous than Thomson got kicked out of three different high schools, the first one was Whooten, the second was Elkton Hills, and the one that he was presently at in the book was Pencey.
