Ferenheit 452 Censorship

Censorship is suppressing a text or part of a medium that is considered objectionable according to certain standards. The censors, or those responsible for sifting through the medium, go through the contents and decide what is and what isn’t appropriate for the public. Without censorship, society is risking offending and pre exposing questionable topics to the wrong audience. Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, envisions a futuristic world where society has been taken over by television, fast cars, and destructive youths. Different minorities objected to the books that offended their beliefs. Books began to all look the same thanks to the growing need to satisfy and incorporate everyone’s views and thoughts. These books were ultimately exterminated permanently, instead of dealing with the publics conflicting attitudes. Eventually, all books were illegal. Censorship is something necessary to the world, but now it seems to be getting out of control.

Censorship is most often determined by governments, religious groups, corporations, or the mass media. The suppression or withholding of questionable content is frequently linked to freedom of speech. In our society, freedom of speech is a civil liberty. One is able to openly speak his or her mind without consequence. It affects our lives everyday in ways that we aren’t even aware of. From the programs they play on TV, to the commercials and songs on the radio, to the contents of the Internet. The public school systems have become much stricter, only allowing full access to very few websites. The censors take into consideration what messages these mediums are trying to portray, and use that to determine if they are suitable. Whose to say these people know best?
