Film Review for Run Lola Run

Film Review of Run Lola Run

For my German film review I watched the movie Run Lola Run and the first thing I noticed is exactly how fast paced it is.   Even after watching in a couple of time there is still never a dull moment in the movie.   The film hits the ground running from the very beginning all the way up blunt quick ending.   It is a movie that has the viewer’s attention from the very beginning all the way through the final credits.

The plot is a simple one in theory; Franka Potente plays Lola who is in a predicament, which is really her boyfriend’s.   If she is not able come up with 100,000 marks, her boyfriend Manni will die at the hands of some mob men he is trying to prove his loyalty to.   The main hurdle (besides getting the money of course) is that she only has 20 minutes to figure out where to get it, actually retrieve it and bring it to Manni.   Lola's race against the clock begins and is actually repeated three times with several minor variations which end up leading to widely different endings just by slight changes or decisions she has made.

After each run (the three different paths she takes us on) the endings are succeeding in preference as far as her fate goes.   She takes the viewer on a thrill ride that brings more and more questions along the way including both tangible and philosophical ones.   Visually the film is extremely aesthetically pleasing and also succeeds artistically.   Its success goes beyond just being visually pleasing because as a viewer you can connect emotionally with Lola since as a viwer root for her to succeed since you can almost feel her love for Manni and her fear of failing him.

The setting of Run Lola Run is a brightly-colored almost fairy tale like world in where the elements of the story can be rearranged and then reconnected at the character’s choosing. Director Tom Tykwer makes use of guns, nuns, homeless people, crooks, bankers, ambulances and policemen just to add more fun...
