Final Project: Student Survival Guide

In the story "Anthony's Dilemma", Anthony uses non-inclusive language to describe a business situation. While Anthony may not have deliberately acted like a sexist, the use of language Anthony displayed shows he expects professionals and businessmen and women to be male. Anthony’s use of language gave the impression women in the business world are the exception rather than the rule. Anthony must improve his use of inclusive language. Anthony clearly does not want to offend anyone, but, more importantly, so that he will help to create an inclusive environment at his organization. While some of the language issues may seem small by themself, they can eventually compile to an environment that may seem hostile towards women to some individuals. This kind of action by Anthony may lead to the possibility of a less diverse work environment, and also to possible legal troubles.
Anthony might want to avoid the use of the word "guys" when referring to business professionals in the future. While other individuals may try to claim the word “guys” is gender-neutral. The fact remains, that “guys” is a word commonly used for men, as seen in phrases like "guys and girls". By using the greeting "Hi guys" and his reference to the "guys at the picnic" reinforce the idea that Anthony only considers the male business professionals in his environment. Some examples Anthony should write instead of "guys" the next time he writes is "Hi, everyone", and "everyone at the picnic."
Anthony also uses the phrase, "the managers and their wives". This phrase shows that Anthony is only considering male managers who were at the picnic. Because of the way Anthony uses his language, the female managers at the picnic might feel like they are looked over. A completely gender-neutral way Anthony should write next time would be, "The managers and their families."
Finally, Anthony states "any man who wants to advance in his career should seriously consider brushing up on his etiquette." This...
