Florida's Water

Are you tired of the water restrictions in your area?   The water shortage problem in Florida has an affect on everyone on a daily basis.   The mandatory restrictions, the increasing occurrence of sinkholes, or even the increase price of water are due to the water shortage in the state.   Water supports all life on this planet and we need it to survive.   Therefore, it is very important that we solve this problem.   The three main causes of Florida’s water shortage are decreased precipitation, increasing population, and water pollution.

The first cause of Florida’s water shortage is the decrease in precipitation.   Parts of Florida are currently experiencing drought conditions.   A drought is a period of unusually dry weather that persists long enough to cause serious problems such as crop damage and/or water supply shortages.   According to the National Research Board, drought is different from other national disasters in that “drought usually occurs rather subtly over a span of months to years instead of minutes to days” (1).   Florida’s subtropical region has two seasons: the rainy and the dry season, which can bring on the shortages.   Therefore, depending on drought frequency, a solution to the lack of rainfall and the problems created may be reducing demand and increasing supply.

The second cause of Florida’s water shortage is the increase in population.   According to the State of Florida, we must start acting now to help control these problems because “Florida’s population is expected to increase to nearly 24 million by 2025” (Department of Environmental Protection).   As a result, the demand for water is rising also and is expected to jump up another 22 percent in the coming years.   Not only are the personal demands of water increasing, but also that of the industrial and agricultural demands.   As the demand increases, we will start feeling the effects in our business and personal lives.

The third, and most preventable, cause of...
