Food shortage is a big problem in the rural parts of third-world countries. Farmers are not always producing as much produce as they need to survive. Normally, they are living with barely enough to feed themselves. Moreover, with the threats of drought and natural disasters, their crops might not even yield enough for them to survive on.
One cause of this food shortage is that farmers in rural areas are not equipped with the knowledge and technology to deal with these threats. They depend mainly on the monsoon season to provide enough water to grow their crops. Thus, if the monsoon season does not deliver enough rain, their crops would not be able to grow well. Since the crops depend on such an uncertain factor like the monsoon season, it is very common for farmers to see their primary source of income go to waste.
The reason for the farmers not being well-equipped is that the government has not taken an interest in them ever since more than enough food is produced to feed the population. The government has found no more need to improve the agricultural industry now that we already have plenty of food being produced. They have turned their focus to healthcare and education and ignored the farmers who are in poverty.
But I think it is possible for the world to eradicate hunger if all countries agree to work together, like they have in the G-8 summit. Instead of just letting the Third-World countries struggle, wealthier and more technologically-advanced countries would be able to help them. If there is a united effort in eliminating poverty and food shortages, much can be done in the fight against it. More importantly, the governments of less developed countries must take time the talk to farmers and find out what would improve their livelihood. They cannot just assume they know the problem because sometimes the help they offer is not always the help that the farmers need. Thus, if the well-developed countries are not parsimonious and are willing...
