In the novel, Forgotten Fire by Adam Bagdasarian, there are three types of women who play into the life of the main character, Vahan. The three different types of women include nurturer, companion, and romantic interest. All three types of women help Vahan survive during the Armenian Holocaust.
The first of the three different women, are the nurturers. If you were to look up what a nurturer is, it is someone who supports, trains, or educates during the period of training or development. The first nurturer is his actual mother, Meera Kenderian. She birthed, raised, cared, and educated Vahan from infancy, up until she told him and his brother to leave the march and escape in order to live. The second nurturer is his best friend, Pattoo’s mother, Mrs. Altoonian. She took in Vahan when he didn’t completely understand what was going on and she cared enough for him to take him in and hide him behind a closet to make sure that he lived. She showed her love for him in this way twice in the book. In the book, Vahan even said “I thought of her as my second mother and I thought of her home as my second homeâ€.(67) Which showed that he felt comfortable there as if it was his home and his mother. The last nurturer in the book is Mrs. Tashian. Vahan came to her because he was employed to her husband, Dr. Tashian whom Vahan was her servant. But their relationship grew to be more like that of a mother-son relationship “As the stay past I began to feel less like a servant and more like a sonâ€. (201)
The second of the three different types of women in Vahan’s life are his companions. They include Oskina, Mrs. Mahari, and Shirin. Oskina would be considered his friend because she and Vahan had more of a fraternal bond then he did with any other of his older siblings. Also she was very boyish and Vahan felt that he could relate to her more than he could with Armenouhi. Mrs. Mahari was one of Vahan’s companions because she told him what to do while living at...
