Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whom we also know as FDR, was the 32nd President of the United States serving for four terms in the office from 1933 to 1945. Franklin was the only president to be in the office for more than two terms. Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on January 30th, 1882 at Hyde Park, New York. [1] Born in a wealthy family, he was well educated and attended Harvard University and Columbia Law Schools. In 1905, he married his cousin Eleanor Roosevelt, whose father was the brother of President Theodore Roosevelt. Franklin followed the example of his fifth cousin, President Theodore Roosevelt, and entered politics, as a democrat. [2]
In 1910, Franklin won the election to the New York senate. Franklin became a popular figure in New York politics and his abilities brought President Woodrow Wilson’s attention. In 1913, President Wilson appointed Franklin as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In 1920, Franklin was the Democratic nominee for Vice President, but losing to the Republicans it did not happen. [1] In August 1921, when Franklin was 39, he became seriously ill, suffering from poliomyelitis. Franklin was paralyzed from the waist down and was told that he would not be able to use his legs permanently, but he refused to accept that he could not use his legs forever, and fought to regain his legs by swimming and special therapies. In 1928, Franklin came back and became the Governor of New York. During his period as the Governor of New York, the economic crisis began with the stock market crashing in October 1929, which created the worst depression in American history. [3] Franklin quickly gathered people and made the New York State Emergency Relief Commission to help the unemployed workers and created public work programs. With great success as the Governor of New York, he was the obvious choice of the Democratic presidential candidate in 1932.
