The book I read was Freak the Mighty written by Rodman Philbrick. The major characters are Max, Freak, Grim, Gram, and Gwen. The setting is in present time. The theme is to recognize the worth in all humans. Freak helps us realize that every human is created equally.
Freak helps Max find his self-worth. For example, when Max says, “I am an earthling.†he realizes he is like everyone else. Freak helped Max even though he had his own disabilities. Freak was the best friend Max ever had.
Max’s grandparents Grim and Gram had always treated Max like he would turn into his dad one day. They would hardly talk to him and try to avoid him. So when Max saved Freak they treated him like a hero. For example, when Grim said, “What this young man needs is a cup of coffee. Real coffee.†Both of the grandparents praised Max. Grim and Gram realized he’s not a bad kid and from then on they treat him more like a son.
Freak always made sure Max didn’t think less of himself. When Max says, “I never had a brain ‘til Freak came along.†he realized how much he needed Freak. Even though everyone thought he was stupid , Freak told him to be smart. For example, on page 97 he gives Max all of the words he uses. That shows how Freak cares for Max.
Freak and Max were inseparable. Freak taught Max how not to care what other people think and to always think high of himself. Max learned that every human is created equal.
