Funk Art
Through out the 1960’s and 70’s a unique type of art movement came about. This form of art became know as Funk Art. Funk art is a style of art inspired by popular culture that uses an unlikely mixture of materials and techniques. The name funk derived from the term “funky†usually implying something offbeat, creative, or novel. Funk art was widely known throughout the USA. Funk artists treated their work with humor, confrontation, inspiration and autobiographical references. They sought to add a new lively touch to contemporary art and change the attitudes towards abstract expressionism. Funk art not only possessed a since of enjoyment, but was also used as an escape from the hardships the American world faced at this time. The 1960’s brought about the birth of Funk Art. The 60’s were known as a time of rebellion, music, and experimentation. Drug usage and sex were fairly common with the people of the 60’s. Colors were the essence of life and an artists’ hand was a political spokesman. The 60’s also lead to the tragic Vietnam war. The war probably had the most impact on this renowned art style. Artists used their talents to convey their thoughts, to display their attitudes towards what the world was going through. Other artists wanted to create a more fun and positive aspect on life, maybe distracting the world from adversity. While some artists had a more comical approach to their work, others had a more distinct liberated manner. Funk art evolved from an art form known as minimalism. Minimalism was a post World War II movement that consisted of visual art and music. Shortly after Minimalism, Funk art was born. Funk art was not the only art form that was popular in this time era. The art world was flourishing with many types of contemporary forms such as op art, pop art, and even feminist art. Some of these tied in closely with funk art and had related characteristics.
