Gay Marriage In California

Equal Rights or Equal Labels?
Gay marriage is a highly controversial social issue in the state of California.   On November 4 2008, California voters adopted a new section to the California constitution providing “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The government gives the spouses rights protection and benefits. This has raised a lot of debate for a while. Proponents argue that same sex couples have the right to marry just as the opposite sex couples do.   Proponents also argue that the same sex partnerships do not share the same rights as opposite sex marriages do in the state of California.   Opponents argue that the definition of the word as seen by the bible and by the English language is a bond between a man and a woman or a wife and a husband.   These same opponents also argue that under California state law a same sex partnership has the exact same rights as an opposite sex marriage. These differences between the two different sides have created a lot of disagreement in the state of California.   Marriage is one of the most meaningful and important aspects of life and should be approached with extreme caution.
The Californian constitution should not allow gay marriage.   Now this not saying I want same sex couples to suffer and not enjoy the same liberties and rights as an opposite sex married couples. I do. I want the same sex couples to get every right and respect in their domestic partnership, and in the state of California, they do get to enjoy the same exact rights.   I just do not believe they should change the definition of the word marriage.   It is important to maintain the integrity and consistency of the English language and of languages all over the world.   If people were to focus on the substance of the word domestic partnership instead of only the name they would understand that it is the same thing as marriage in the state of California without calling it marriage.
