GEN 105 Elevator Speech

I was so excited to continue my education that I e-mailed a coworker, Patti, to share my excitement.   She asked me many questions.   The first on she asked was where I was going.   I let her know that I was attending the University of Phoenix.   She asked if they were online courses.   In my response, I told her they were online classes.   I mentioned that it was a learning form called distant learning.

This intrigued Patti.   She wanted to know how it all worked.   Patti asked if I thought that I would learn just as much online as I would in a traditional class.

My response to Patti was an easy one.   I told her, a person logs on to the university website and on the main page, current classes are listed.   All someone has to do is click on the link.   The next page that is shown has many options; there are the materials and discussion links.   Click on the link that is needed.

If she was to choose the discussion link it would bring her to the forum.   I explained that this is where we post assignments, have threaded discussions, and even give or receive feedback.   Feedback, good or bad, can either be from a student or instructor.

She asked what times I had to be online.   I told her there was no specific time that I needed to log on.   I could log on any day or time I needed or wanted to.   This was disconcerting to Patti.   She is used to the interaction between students face-to-face.

I explained that in the discussions are forms of asynchronous communication.   She asked what the heck that was.   I told her the definition; people communicating with each other but not online at the same time.   I told her this type of communication happens everyday.   We were doing it just then, via e-mail.

Patti was thrilled to hear that someone could do classes online.   I told her about what I was learning and all the tools that the University of Phoenix has to offer.
