Student Survival Guide
During week one, we posted our personal biography and read our instructors and classmates to learn a little bit about one another. We discussed our initial thoughts on distant learning and why we decided to choose distant learning over traditional type learning environment. One of the first things learned in the class that is vital to know is; understanding Distant Learning and understanding the vocabulary and the advantages and disadvantages of distant learning. Since this is not a face-to-face type of communication this can pose to be more difficult in your way of learning and sharing your views to a specific subject properly. Another subject you must understand is Asynchronous Communication is a learning environment where everyone is not logged in at the same time. Using the Threaded Forum effectively in the class and knowing where to correctly post your responses or start new threads for a new topic. We also learned how to properly give correct and formal Feedback in the class to the instructor and classmates.
During week two, we discussed Computing Skills for Distant Learning and how to correctly use Course Forums Effectively and the use of the internet for academic purposes. This included the dangers of possibly misleading information from the internet versus finding information in a traditional library and the differences in both types of searches. We discussed how tone and Writing Styles will differ due to the material being posted or written and who you are addressing such as family, friends, classmates or instructors. We also discussed how important grammar is in a distant learning environment to ensure you are not offending anyone in any way such as their gender, religion or personal status.
