Introduction
Generic benchmarking is an important tool for companies in the decision making process. With groundbreaking technology, in 1996, Gene One entered the biotech industry that helped the company grow to $400 million dollars in eight years. Gene One is currently in the process of going public in order to keep up with the biotechnology industry, achieve growth targets, and develop new technologies. Part of this process will include the need for reorganization to align with the Sarbanes-Oxly Act. This analysis will identify companies that would provide useful benchmarking strategies for Gene One. The analysis will also include key concepts to compare and contrast practices of the individual companies as related to the key course concepts.
Analysis
Leadership is a complex concept that is defined as the ability to influence, motivates, and enables others to contribute to the effectiveness and success of the organizations of which they are members. (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005) When an organization is initiating an IPO, having a strong leader in place is essential. Burger King’s CEO embraced the idea of transitioning leadership to a highly qualified team member with experience in IPOs. Google’s founders were hesitant about having a CEO because they did not want anyone above them or telling them how to run the company. The company was moving at a fast pace and the investors demanded an experienced leader to help with the day-to-day activities and upcoming ventures. Gene One is faced with the dilemma of replacing some of its board members with associates who are more experienced in IPOs. Gene One can follow Burger King’s lead by ensuring key and knowledgeable personnel are in place according to experience and not friendship.
