Homosexuality and Genetics

Homosexuality has existed since the beginning of humankind. Lesbians and gays are found in every race, religion, culture, and society. From the most modern nations to the most primitive tribes, homosexual relationships are found. Because it is so wide spread, most experts believe it is not an environmental effect only. Socio-biologist and related scientific experts believe homosexuality is inborn and linked to genetic factors. This paper will discuss the biological evidence which links homosexuality to genetics. Additionally, the paper will address the different studies that have been performed with their outcomes and criticisms, with the religious, moral and ethical views that homosexuals face in our society today.
In recent decades, many debated topics have come under the scrutiny of sociobiologists, trying to determine the causation and origins of homosexuality. Originally thought by the American Psychological Association (the APA) to be a mental disorder, research, origins, and developments have consequently led to the removal by the APA from its lists of diagnostics and disorders. The inclusion of homosexuality on the APA’s list of disorders gave heterosexual people a negative perception which continues to oppress them in present day society.
Human sexuality is often thought as a complex series of interrelationships between gene distribution, biology, brain structure, and environmental factors. The APA currently states that (sexuality), “it emerges from most people in early adolescents with no prior sexual experience”, social theorists argue that a person’s upbringing can directly influence homosexuality.
