Geography of Corn
Introduction
Corn, also known as maize, is a cereal grain, which belongs to the family Gramineae. It is monoecious and has both male and female inflorescences. The female inflourences are found in the axils of the middle stem leaves and the male ones form big terminal tassels. The fruit is indehiscent and has a husk that is formed when the fruit and seed walls fuse. Corn comprises of three major components, which include the husk, the endosperm, and the embryo. It is evident that were it not for people who planted and developed this cereal grain, then it would not be existing. Corn can, therefore, survive only if planted and nurtured by human being (Matz 215).

Origin of Corn
It is believed that the grain originated from Mexico 7000 years ago. It started from a natural grass known as teosinte which is however very different when compared to the modern day corn. Kernels of teosinte appeared smaller and far from each other as compared to the modern day corn which has its kernels close to one another.
From Mexico, corn spread to the southwestern parts of the United States, coast, and then Peru. The Indians while migrating to the eastern region of modern day North America also brought corn with them (Wayne 358).
