Globalization: two different approaches
Based on “China Blue” and “Up the Yangtze”

      Globalization is a world wide process which can be analyzed from many different perspectives.   The reason for the various aspects of globalization is that it affects everything in different ways. The two films “China Blue” and “Up the Yangtze” show the impact of Globalization, but seen through different eyes.
      “China Blue” shows the globalization through the means of business and economy. It shows how factories for “blue jeans” give new job “opportunities” for people. It reveals the positive effect of Globalization on businesses and the negative effect on workers. Factory workers’ perspective is to work in the same factory till date: “unknown”. However, it doesn’t reveal how people life is changing because of the globalization or the new working “opportunities”.   On the other hand, the film “Up the Yangtze” shows globalization more or less in terms of urbanization and people ambition to fit in the “new world”.
      The film starts and ends with narration about how China and the river Yangtze had changed through time. I think that this is a metaphor or a different way to say how globalization changes not only physically the world around us but also people perception of the world. The two main characters reveal the idea of different perception and consequently new ambitions. Both of them goes to work not simply because they want money (even if it’s obvious this is one of the main reasons) but because they want to achieve bigger personal goals to be famous and independent or to be educated. I think that these wishes are driven by the globalizing and developing world.
      On one hand, there is the factory worker in “China Blue” who wants to work because it is new opportunity. On the other hand, the worker on the ship in “Up the Yangtze” goes to work because he needs the money to fit in the changing environment, adapt to...
