God Save The Queen

God Save The Queen
In the movie The Queen directed by Stephen Frears, the Queen has an intense devotion to tradition.   Her devotion to tradition validates her role of Queen in the government of England.   The role of the Queen is becoming more of a ceremonial one as time progresses, and the Queen still is grasping onto her traditions from a culture that is slowly fading before her eyes.   Her commitment to the old customs that have shaped England for years keeps her voice in every discussion about political affairs.
The Queen, played by Helen Mirren, is the symbol of England.   She knows that as royalty, there are many specific actions that one must do when around her.   The Queen uses this to her advantage, specifically when she meets Tony Blair, the new Prime Minister of England, for the first time.   She immediately is in a position of power over him, and is quite intimidating.   She knows that he must be nervous, and the first thing that she asks Tony Blair is if he has been shown how to start a nuclear war yet.   Asking a question like that is just to see how he shall respond to it.   Blair responds by saying, “You obviously know my job better than I do.”   This meaning of this sentence that he utters appears in the movie many times.   He is a new Prime Minister, and has much to learn.   The Queen makes this point further when she mentions that he is her tenth Prime Minister, with the first being the great Winston Churchill.   This shows that Tony Blair has the bar set extremely high for his tenure as Prime Minister.
