Assignment 3-Legalization of Marijuana
Should marijuana be legalized for general use? One of the most controversial issues of today’s society is that of legalizing marijuana. The focus of the debate is whether marijuana should be used as medicine, recreation, or neither. True it can be harmful to the body and impair judgment, but no more so than any other substance we have legalized and much less so than alcohol. If used properly, it can be utilized as medicine and if not abused, it can be used for recreational use as well. People tend to complain about the topic because they have opinions about certain aspects of the issue that do not coincide with that of others. They argue about money spent on buying marijuana, and about the people using the drug. What people fail to realize is that legalization of marijuana has many positive incentives for the United States. When someone hears about a drug bust, it is mainly about marijuana. You never hear about drugs such as speed, acid, or heroin as much because more people want to use marijuana as a safer and cheaper therapeutic alternative. Times are changing and many people do not want to change. If we could smoke tobacco and drink, then why not be able to use marijuana? Who is to say that smoking marijuana will be bad unless you have tried a probationary policy as there is evidence supporting both sides of the issue? One might argue that it would be bad because we have seen what can happen. True enough, but we have also seen the bad effects of alcohol and yet most of us are still able to have a social drink with a friend with out bad consequences happening because we are responsible human beings. People need to look at both sides of the spectrum and decide based on facts.
